Some improvements are only recommended for short stays such as new windows or doors, paint & hardware fixtures and baseboards and/or moldings. These will improve the appearance of your home and ad slight value to your home but they are only recommended for short stays after the work in completed.
Take into consideration the cost of the project before continuing any project. Make sure it is economical for your intentions and a good investment before proceeding. Be careful not to spend more than your original plan so you are not losing money when the time comes to sell. These recommendations assume you will use economy supplies and materials in the improvement project.
More substantial improvements may be suitable for longer stays in a home such as, new flooring, adding an additional bathroom or finishing a basement or attic. This type of improvement should only be done if they are in disrepair and take away from your otherwise attractive home.
These improvements will greatly improve the value of the home but are more expensive for the family that has decided to sell within a year. If making these improvements, make sure you use average or economy materials, choose colors that are common to the average buyer, and pay a reasonable installation cost. Over spending can cause you to lose money in the process of selling your home.
